RESUMO

The share of renewable energy has grown significantly in global energy supply, yet the evaluation of renewable energy utilization has remained limited. Hence, this research explored economic and environmental efficiency in renewable energy utilization in 20 OECD (The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries from 2015 to 2020. The study approached the data envelopment analysis-slack-based measure (DEA-SBM) to evaluate economic efficiency, and the DEA undesirable output to measure environmental efficiency. Four inputs as labor force, gross capital formation, total renewable energy capacity, and share of renewable energy were compared to two desirable outputs as the gross domestic product (GDP), and total energy production in the economic efficiency model. In the environmental efficiency model, the same inputs were evaluated with GDP as the desirable output and CO2 emissions as the undesirable output. The DEA-SBM revealed that Australia, Belgium, Norway, the UK, and the USA were efficient in economic evaluation, whereas DEA undesirable output indicated that Belgium, France, Sweden, the UK, and the USA were efficient in environmental evaluation. The governments are suggested to adjust the resources management since the number of efficient units decreased in the economic assessment while fluctuating in the environmental assessment.

RESUMO

In this study, we proposed a novel approach to improve centrifugal pump performance with regard to the pump head, pump efficiency, and power. Firstly, to establish constraints, an optimal numerical model that accounted for factors such as pump efficiency and the head was considered. The pump was designed, and an artificial intelligence algorithmic approach was applied to the pump before performing experiments. We considered a set of models by selecting the parameters of the centrifugal pump casing section area, the interference of the impeller, the volute tongue length, and the volute tongue angle. The weights of the factors of safety and displacement on the optimization indices were estimated. The matrix of the weights for the optimal process was less than 38% or greater than 62%. This approach guarantees a complicated multi-objective optimization problem. The results show that the centrifugal pump performances were improved.

RESUMO

In response to challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change to achieve the goal of ensuring sustainable economic growth, offshore wind power development not only provides a clean and sustainable source of energy but also provides opportunities for economic growth and job creation. Offshore wind energy projects have been promptly suggested in Vietnam due to policy advancement, with the country's excellent wind resources. The success of an offshore wind energy project is decided mainly by choosing the best location for offshore wind power station (OWPS) construction, which is a complex multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) problem with the coexistence of conflicting factors. There is a problem with incomplete decision information use and information loss during the decision-making process, and it is easy to overlook the interaction difficulty in a fuzzy environment. To address the complex nature of the prioritization problem posed, this study proposes a hybrid MCDM framework combining the spherical fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (SF-AHP) and weighted aggregated sum product assessment (WASPAS). SF-AHP is used in the first stage to determine the significance levels of OWPS evaluation criteria. WASPAS is then utilized to rank locations of OWPS. A comprehensive set of evaluation criteria developed based on the concept of sustainable development has been recognized by reviewing the literature review and interviewing experts to practice the two-stage MCDM model. A real case study for Vietnam is conducted to test the effectiveness of the proposed method. The best location schemes have been determined by using the decision framework. The results of the sensitivity analysis and a comparison analysis demonstrate that the decision framework is practical and robust. The proposed methodology can be used to attain a decision-making process at the regional level for offshore wind farm planning and coastal development, and the study results encourage the establishment of renewable energy development policies.

RESUMO

Compliant mechanisms' design aims to create a larger workspace and simple structural shapes because these mechanical systems usually have small dimensions, reduced friction, and less bending. From that request, we designed optimal bridge-type compliant mechanism flexure hinges with a high magnification ratio, low stress by using a flexure joint, and especially no friction and no bending. This joint was designed with optimal dimensions for the studied mechanism by using the method of grey relational analysis (GRA), which is based on the Taguchi method (TM), and finite element analysis (FEA). Grey relational grade (GRG) has been estimated by an artificial neural network (ANN). The optimal values were in good agreement with the predicted value of the Taguchi method and regression analysis. The finite element analysis, signal-to-noise analysis, surface plot, and analysis of variance demonstrated that the design dimensions significantly affected the equivalent stress and displacement. The optimal values of displacement were also verified by the experiment. The outcomes were in good agreement with a deviation lower than 6%. Specifically, the displacement amplification ratio was obtained as 65.36 times compared with initial design.

RESUMO

This study focuses on estimating CO2 emissions and analysing energy efficiencies using the Energy Efficiency Operational Index (EEOI) for ferries sailing within an urban port of Taiwan and passenger-ships operating on island routes surrounding Taiwan. A comparative analysis of energy efficiency parameters showed that hybrid diesel-electric ferries had a 12% improved efficiency compared to the traditional full-diesel ferries, while high-speed passenger ships had up to 79% lower efficiency than medium-speed passenger ships. Some potential policies for reducing CO2 emissions from in-port ferries and island passenger-ships are presented based on these results. The estimated CO2 emissions from in-port ferries sailing within the urban port could be reduced by 10% when employing hybrid diesel-electric ferries instead of traditional full-diesel ferries. Emissions from island passenger-ships operating on island routes could be reduced by 11-26% through utilising small medium-speed passenger ships instead of small high-speed passenger ships and large passenger ships.

RESUMO

Industries' air pollution causes serious challenges to modern society, among them exhaust gases from internal combustion engines, which are currently one of the main sources. This study proposes a non-thermal plasma (NTP) system for placement in the exhaust system of internal combustion engines to reduce the toxic contaminants (HC, CO, and NOx) of exhaust gases. This NTP system generates a high-voltage discharge that not only responds to the ion chemical reaction to eliminate NOx and CO, but that also generates a combustion reaction at the local high temperature of plasma to reduce HC. The NTP system was designed on both the front and rear of the exhaust pipe to analyze the difference of different exhaust flow rates under the specified frequency. The results indicate that the NTP system can greatly reduce toxic contaminants. The NTP reactor placed in the front of exhaust pipe gave HC and CO removal efficiency of about 34.5% and 16.0%, respectively, while the NTP reactor placed in the rear of exhaust pipe gave NOx removal efficiency of about 41.3%. In addition, the voltage and material directly affect the exhaust gases obviously. In conclusion, the proposed NTP system installed in the exhaust system can significantly reduce air pollutants. These results suggest that applying NTP to the combustion engine should be a useful tool to simultaneously reduce both emissions of NOx and CO.

RESUMO

The Asia-Pacific region is known as a favorite destination for global medical travelers due to its medical expertise, innovative technology, safety, attractive tourism destination and cost advantage in the recent decade. This study contributes to propose an approach which effectively assesses performance of medical tourism industry based on considering the economic impact factors as well as provides a conceptual framework for the industry analysis. Grey system theory is utilized as a major analyzing approach. According to that, factors impact on the sustainable development of medical tourism in Asia-Pacific region could be identified. The performance of each destination in this region was simultaneously revealed. The results presented an overall perspective of the medical tourism industry in the scope of the Asia-Pacific region, and in Taiwan particularly. Data was collected on six major destinations including Singapore, Thailand, India, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan. The results proved that tourism sources and healthcare medical infrastructures play a crucial role in promoting the healthcare travel industry, while cost advantage and marketing effectiveness were less considered. In addition, performance analyse indicated that Thailand has a good performance and stands in the top ranking, followed by Malaysia, India, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan, respectively. The revenue of Taiwan has increased slowly in the last six years, with a market worth approximately NT$20.5 billion, and the number of medical travelers is expected to increase to 777,523 by 2025. The findings of this study are expected to provide useful information for the medical tourism industry and related key players in strategic planning.

RESUMO

Over the years, analysis and induction of personality traits has been a topic for individual subjective conjecture or speculation, rather than a focus of inductive scientific analysis. This study proposes a novel framework for analysis and induction of personality traits. First, 14 personality constructs based on the "Big Five" personality factors were developed. Next, a new fingerprint image algorithm was used for classification, and the fingerprints were classified into eight types. The relationship between personality traits and fingerprint type was derived from the results of the questionnaire survey. After comparison of pre-test and post-test results, this study determined the induction ability of personality traits from fingerprint type. Experimental results showed that the left/right thumbprint type of a majority of subjects was left loop/right loop and that the personalities of individuals with this fingerprint type were moderate with no significant differences in the 14 personality constructs.

RESUMO

The growth of economy and population together with the higher demand in energy has created many concerns for the Indian electricity industry whose capacity is at 211 gigawatts mostly in coal-fired plants. Due to insufficient fuel supply, India suffers from a shortage of electricity generation, leading to rolling blackouts; thus, performance evaluation and ranking the industry turn into significant issues. By this study, we expect to evaluate the rankings of these companies under control of the Ministry of Power. Also, this research would like to test if there are any significant differences between the two DEA models: Malmquist nonradial and Malmquist radial. Then, one advance model of MPI would be chosen to see these companies' performance in recent years and next few years by using forecasting results of Grey system theory. Totally, the realistic data 14 are considered to be in this evaluation after the strict selection from the whole industry. The results found that all companies have not shown many abrupt changes on their scores, and it is always not consistently good or consistently standing out, which demonstrated the high applicable usability of the integrated methods. This integrated numerical research gives a better "past-present-future" insights into performance evaluation in Indian electricity industry.

RESUMO

Choosing a partner is a critical factor for success in international strategic alliances, although criteria for partner selection vary between developed and transitional markets. This study aims to develop effective methods to assist enterprise to measure the firms' operation efficiency, find out the candidate priority under several different inputs and outputs, and forecast the values of those variables in the future. The methodologies are constructed by the concepts of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and grey model (GM). Realistic data in four consecutive years (2009-2012) a total of 20 companies of the Electronic Manufacturing Service (EMS) industry that went public are completely collected. This paper tries to help target company-DMU1-to find the right alliance partners. By our proposed approach, the results show the priority in the recent years. The research study is hopefully of interest to managers who are in manufacturing industry in general and EMS enterprises in particular.
